【TOPIC】
An Architectural Quest
in the Post-Pandemic Era
【TOPIC MAKER】
DONG Gong
DONG Gong Founder, Design Principal of Vector ArchitectsForeign Member of French Academy of Architecture Plym Distinguished Visiting Professor,University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
【BRIEF】
I can watch movies on a cellphone, so why should I go to a cinema?
I can view famous paintings online, so why should I go to an art museum?
I can read books on PAD, so why should I go to a bookstore or library?
……
The year 2020 will surely be remembered as an unusual historical period. The Covid-19 pandemic that swept across the world, has changed how people live and work in many ways, and has indeed been a great challenge for our traditional life style. Virtualization technology has led to developments in technology using virtual public spaces, such as the rise of Virtual Meeting Room(VMR), an increasing number of shopping websites and the spread of social media platforms. While these virtual public spaces initiate a safer, more convenient, and more efficient life for individuals, they also produce a declining dependency and interest among people in physical public spaces. The pandemic will eventually subside. At the same time, however, virtualization technology will stay with us and continue its development. In the post-pandemic era, how should physical public spaces cope with this situation, and what roles will they play?
Ultimately, urban vitality comes from the real encounters and coexistence among people, which arouse the public energy. As public space has developed rapidly, architects must figure out how to redefine the contemporary characteristics of physical public spaces, how to explore and consolidate the irreplaceable qualities and value existing in these buildings, and how to respond specifically when they design. Virtual space expands people’s perceptions. At the same time, how could this new experience be interpreted and contribute positively to physical space's design consciousness? Moreover, how should they eventually develop a public space full of sustainable vitality while attracting more people to participate in the public life of a real and lively city in this new era?
The participants are supposed to choose a specific program from public spaces, which he/she is familiar with, and question and rethink its conventional spatial structure, functional zoning, as well as atmosphere of spaces, scenes, and other elements. Eventually, critical thinking of the issues must need to be realized in a specific design scheme, giving the answer to an ideal urban life.
The participants will choose the place where the building will be located, but the place must be real. The participants should fully account for its public character in the urban or country side context. The building’s floor area should be no less than 500㎡ and no more than 2000㎡, and it can be appropriately adjusted if necessary.
